Soggy next few days expected as Bill traverses the country

As Bill swirls around over Oklahoma, it is starting to drift more and more eastward. Bill is still considered a huge threat to millions as several inches of rain could induce more flooding across areas from Oklahoma to Rhode Island as it crosses the country, especially in areas that have undergone severe flooding just several weeks ago. Be on the lookout for some thunderstorms in the Northeast and try to plan around potentially heavy rains on Sunday throughout the Northeast. Also, although slim, there is a potential for some severe storms to pop up in the NYC area on Sunday, so please heed all warnings set forth by the NWS.

HEAT WAVE INCOMING FOR THE NORTHEAST!

Today in and around New York City, temperatures will be around 70 degrees with some rain, but next week, especially around midweek, a very intense heat wave is expected to arrive.

This heat wave will not only bring heat indexes in NYC to rise above 90, but across the East Coast temperatures will be above normal for this time of year with a very high humidity. Temperatures in places such as D.C. could reach 90, and the heat indexes could soar into the triple digits. Although this heat wave will strike next week, it is not expected to last very long, by the end of the week and the weekend, some rain will arrive in the NYC area to cool things off by several degrees.

Remember to stay hydrated!

BREAKING NEWS: A 7.0 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED ON THE SOUTHERN MID ATLANTIC RIDGE, THERE IS NO TSUNAMI THREAT FOR ANY LOCATION SURROUNDING THIS AREA.

Tropical Depression Bill

As Bill continues to swirl its way into Oklahoma, the rain bands extending into the Gulf of Mexico from its center are beginning to move northward as well. The rain from this system is the biggest threat thus far for the remnants of Bill, with up to 8 inches of rain in southern Oklahoma, to several inches of rain expected to fall over a 500 mile long path across the United States over the next few days, to the possibility of severe thunderstorms, Bill has proved itself to be one large rain maker.

Okay, okay, we know that there will be large amounts of rain, but how will this affect me? Well, as Bill dumps its remaining moisture over the US, already flooded rivers from just a few weeks ago that have not already returned to normal will pose a potentially catastrophic threat to anyone living on or near shorelines to rivers or streams. Also, in areas such as the Northeast, occasional downpours may cause flash flooding, which can take anyone by surprise.

Now that we have said how Bill may affect you, Weather 360 hopes that if you are to be impacted by any element of this storm, that you will be safe and heed all advisories, watches, and warnings set out by your local NWS (National Weather Service) office(s).

Recount of the severe storms yesterday across the Metro Area

The severe thunderstorms that rolled across the Northeast yesterday came into the vicinity of NYC in the afternoon hours, bringing down temperatures by as much as 25 degrees, and creating some localized river and stream flooding.

Yesterday’s severe storms that impacted southern parts of Connecticut New York brought with it hail the size of quarters and frequent cloud to ground lightning, not to mention the torrential rains again.

For the NYC Metro Area in general, the probability of there being severe thunderstorms will greatly increase over the next few months. So yesterday may have been the beginning of the next round of thunderstorms that will span across the coming months.

Its true! Snow was observed in parts of Connecticut and New York around noon today. So the question is, is winter really over?

Well, today was more of an anomaly, where some cold air mixed in with some precipitation to make some snow and sleet. There were no known accumulations, and temperatures will also be warmer tomorrow and this weekend.

Severe thunderstorms could produce life-threatening conditions, SOON

In the NYC Metro Area especially, in a couple of hours the potential for severe, and potentially life threatening conditions will come into play. If you have not already noticed or have not yet been outdoors, the temperatures have begun to cool and wind speeds have also begun to pick up ahead of the storm.

What will these severe storms include?

First of all, a severe storm normally needs to have the following to be classified as a severe storm; hail, gusty winds, lightning, and heavy rain (for more, go to our Terms to Know page), which happens to be the exact components of the storms expected to line up and sweep through nearly all 31 counties in the NYC Metro Area.

Wait a second, most of those components aren’t deadly, right?

Well not exactly, because thinking about the effects of hail, gusty winds, lightning, and heavy rain, you may come to realize that hail can damage windows, vehicles, and cause serious injury, gusty winds can knock down trees and power lines, lightning can electrocute items and people, and last, but now least, heavy rains can create flash flooding. So know that you know some of the effects of the components that create a severe thunderstorm, you will hopefully know how to properly protect yourself and you property from one.

Be on the lookout for any severe thunderstorm watches or warnings, and stay safe!

Rainy and slippery morning commute for many this morning

For those about to be outdoors and driving, it my be a fairly good idea to bring along with you an umbrella if you already have not noticed…

The first large band of rain has already swept through the NYC Metro Area and will continue to move northeastward, whereas another, even larger band of heavy rain and thunderstorms is moving northeastward as well, straight towards the NYC Metro Area. Be on the lookout for the some thunderstorms, one or two of which may be severe, and also be careful while driving through heavy rain on roadways. Rain events such as this one are common throughout the spring season, but that doesn’t mean to neglect safety, so stay safe!

Tonight, a large storm system moving in from the south and west will begin to move into the NYC area. The storms will consist first of mainly rain, but then along with the rain, thunder and lightning will begin to set in. This was a short post to lay out what will mainly occur tomorrow to help you be prepared.

Warm temperatures and red flag warnings

Across the Northeast, the National Weather Service (NWS) has had to issue red flag warnings and hazardous weather outlooks due to the very dry (and warmer than average) conditions later on today creating the conditions that spread wild and brush fires due to any type of ignition. So, although today will be a very warm day, the NWS does not recommend anyone in the areas with red flag warnings or any type of advisory or alert to use matches or any type of ignition source outdoors due to risk of fire spread. So please refer to weather.gov to see if your area is at risk today.

So, enjoy the above average temperatures today, but be aware that there is an elevated risk for the spread of fire today.

Get ready for warm temperatures tomorrow!

Tomorrow across the Northeast warmer and milder temperatures will flood in and bring some areas’ first taste of summer.

Temperatures from Boston to New York should hover around 70 to 75 degrees whereas areas further north, high temperatures will be mainly from 55 to 65 degrees. Areas in southern parts of the Northeast will likely be in the mid to upper 70’s.’
