TORNADOES RIP THROUGH PARTS OF THE NORTHEAST OVERNIGHT

BREAKING NEWS: Multiple tornado warnings issued last night for places in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey

The remnants of Tropical Storm Bill, while moving over Virginia still Tropical Depression Bill, brought in several lines of extremely dangerous and severe thunderstorms accompanied with rotation sufficient enough to produce tornadoes. These thunderstorms also dumped whatever was left of Bill’s moisture as well, in some places over 3 inches of rain fell in less than an hour. There were many flash flood, river flood, and flood warnings issued for areas from the Midwest to New Jersey last night as well, causing the need for some high water rescues by local fire departments and others. For anyone anywhere in the United States that may be impacted by a tornado (basically everywhere), remember that although it may be interesting to watch and videotape a tornado or any type of severe storm, whenever the warning goes out for you, take all precautions and heed every warning in order to stay safe.

Rain is moving into our area tonight

The remnants of Bill, still a Tropical Depression with winds of 20 MPH, is expected to move right over the New York Metro Area tonight and tomorrow, bringing with it heavy rains and some gusty winds. The amounts of rain that will fall in and around the city will likely be no more than an inch or two, with the exception in some localized areas. Mainly, this storm system will be a rain maker that will start out the week with soggy conditions, but let this not be any premonition for the rest of the week, for drier and higher temperatures can be expected. Tonight and tomorrow of you are heading outdoors or planning to head outdoors, we at Weather 360 do advise you keep an umbrella handy invade of a sudden downpour.

Tropical Depression Bill to impact the East Coast with rain, wind, and more rain

Although Tropical Depression Bill has only 20 mph winds and has already let go of all its moisture in Oklahoma, it is still expected to maintain a Tropical Depression status while moving over portions of the Mid Atlantic and New England. For those wondering if New York will suffer from heavy rains from Bill, the truth is, yes, on Sunday, areas from Maryland to Connecticut will be the victims of high humidity, gusty winds, and heavy rains. Even though the Northeast will be suffering from heavy rains on Sunday, the total amount of rain will likely all be below 3 inches, which is less than half of what some areas in the Mid West have received over the past few days from Bill.

Overall, the Northeast, and the New York Metro Area will have to deal with a soggy Sunday this weekend.

As Bill swirls around over Oklahoma, it is starting to drift more and more eastward. Bill is still considered a huge threat to millions as several inches of rain could induce more flooding across areas from Oklahoma to Rhode Island as it crosses the country, especially in areas that have undergone severe flooding just several weeks ago. Be on the lookout for some thunderstorms in the Northeast and try to plan around potentially heavy rains on Sunday throughout the Northeast. Also, although slim, there is a potential for some severe storms to pop up in the NYC area on Sunday, so please heed all warnings set forth by the NWS.

BILL WEAKENS TO TROPICAL DEPRESSION, NOW EXPECTED TO DUMP SEVERAL INCHES OF RAIN ACROSS THE MIDWEST

As Bill made landfall south of Galveston, Texas yesterday, it began its track to to Oklahoma. Although Bill, now a Tropical Depression, has weakened, it is expected to stay organized as it is and even strengthen slightly before weakening while dumping the majority of its moisture on southeastern Oklahoma. In areas such as northeastern Texas and eastern Oklahoma, rain amounts could range anywhere from 4 to 8 inches, potentially causing extreme flooding of streams, rivers, and low lying areas susceptible to inland flooding. At the moment, Bill still remains fairly organized and is moving across Texas into Oklahoma, before significantly weakening to a remnant low and traversing the rest of the country until reaching the Northeast. Once in the Northeast, the remnants of Bill will dump any last bit of moisture it has in the form of rain showers and the occasional thunderstorm.

Recently, rivers in the areas that are expected to see rain soon have flooded, some breaking historic records, this means that there is the possibility of large flooding to happen again with the heavy rains expected to come, so keep yourself safe by heeding all warnings set out by your local NWS (National Weather Service) office.

Brace for more rain tomorrow in and around NYC

Tonight, as more rain moves into our area, the set up for rain tomorrow is becoming increasingly likely.

Tomorrow, not only will heavy rains soak the NYC area, again, but there is the possibility for some severe thunderstorms as well. Some of these thunderstorms may contain especially heavy rains and gusty winds, along with the possibility for some more small hail. The rains will last the majority of the day tonight and will likely impact both the morning and afternoon rush hours.

Severe thunderstorms could produce life-threatening conditions, SOON

In the NYC Metro Area especially, in a couple of hours the potential for severe, and potentially life threatening conditions will come into play. If you have not already noticed or have not yet been outdoors, the temperatures have begun to cool and wind speeds have also begun to pick up ahead of the storm.

What will these severe storms include?

First of all, a severe storm normally needs to have the following to be classified as a severe storm; hail, gusty winds, lightning, and heavy rain (for more, go to our Terms to Know page), which happens to be the exact components of the storms expected to line up and sweep through nearly all 31 counties in the NYC Metro Area.

Wait a second, most of those components aren’t deadly, right?

Well not exactly, because thinking about the effects of hail, gusty winds, lightning, and heavy rain, you may come to realize that hail can damage windows, vehicles, and cause serious injury, gusty winds can knock down trees and power lines, lightning can electrocute items and people, and last, but now least, heavy rains can create flash flooding. So know that you know some of the effects of the components that create a severe thunderstorm, you will hopefully know how to properly protect yourself and you property from one.

Be on the lookout for any severe thunderstorm watches or warnings, and stay safe!

Severe storms tomorrow

Tomorrow there will be a line of severe storms moving through our area. Some of the severe storms could produce large hail and damaging winds in certain cells. The stormes will continue into the overnight hours and could be potentially dangerous even done so please heed all warnings set out by the National Weather Service. Even though tornadoes not very common in our area tomorrow there is the potential for some isolated storms capable of producing tornadoes and damaging winds. While operating Motor vehicles tomorrow please use extra caution due to the possibility of some downed trees and power lines from strong winds and heavy rains. Expect some watchers and possibly even some warnings to go up tonight and early next morning.

Storms move out of NYC Area, mild temperatures and clear skies ahead

Today as the storms move out, clear skies and mild temperatures move in. In and around Manhattan, temperatures will max out around 65 degrees, with not much difference even in temperature in further north counties.

Although conditions will be nice today, tomorrow some more showers will be moving through later on in the day. Some of these showers could develop into a thunderstorm or two. So don’t put those umbrellas away yet, rain is still coming…

For those about to be outdoors and driving, it my be a fairly good idea to bring along with you an umbrella if you already have not noticed…

The first large band of rain has already swept through the NYC Metro Area and will continue to move northeastward, whereas another, even larger band of heavy rain and thunderstorms is moving northeastward as well, straight towards the NYC Metro Area. Be on the lookout for the some thunderstorms, one or two of which may be severe, and also be careful while driving through heavy rain on roadways. Rain events such as this one are common throughout the spring season, but that doesn’t mean to neglect safety, so stay safe!
