The Latest: Special Announcement, Update on Papua New Guinea, Weather 360 news, and the warm up soon for the Northeast

On this edition of our 7 PM EST post of ‘The Latest’  we will talk about the special announcement we promised we would release, an update on the 7.7 earthquake in Papua New Guinea along with the tsunami it triggered, and the warm up headed for the Northeast, specifically the NYC Metro Area, where temperatures could soar over fifteen degrees.

The Latest:  Final update of the Papua New Guinea earthquake and tsunami

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake on the Richter Scale that shook up parts of Papua New Guinea yesterday has caused tens of large, over 4.0, aftershocks that have reminded locals and travelers there that earthquakes don’t just affect several seconds.  The small and local tsunami created by the initial 7.7 earthquake was measured around two meters at it’s top in Papua New Guinea according to some reports.  Earthquakes such as the 7.7 in Papua New Guinea test the different tsunami warning centers every time they occur, this makes sure that when there are larger earthquakes and tsunamis that the warning centers are able to issue correct and more accurate watches, warnings, and advisories.

The Latest:  Warm up for the winter weary NYC, Boston, and the Northeast as a whole soon!

After the brutal winter and the morning snow has moved through the Northeast, many are hoping for a mild start to April across the I-95 Corridor.  The truth is though, that although over the next week there will be more warmth and mild temperatures across the Northeast, there is the potential for some more cold to come in briefly overt the next two weeks before being purged out of the Northeast by the springtime air.  Be ready for warmer temperatures, but be aware that there may be some more cold spells in store for the Northeast.

What Weather 360 would like to say is that our Hurricane Season 2015 cyclone prediction will be released BEFORE June 1st, meaning, with all the combined information from other organizations (ex: Colorado and NHC) along with several other different sources, Weather 360 will provide an official Hurricane Season 2015 cyclone preliminary prediction (number of cyclones only, ex: named, hurricanes, major hurricanes.)

Over the past several decades, data has been collected about hurricane forecasts to see how they have changed over the years.  As most of you may have guessed, in the Atlantic Basin and around the world Hurricane Forecasting errors over the past decades have decreased significantly.

The Latest:  2015 Hurricane Season Analysis

Due to the sharp decrease in forecasting errors (for hurricanes) over the past several decades, it is now clearer to forecast hurricane seasons well in advance with more accuracy than ever.   First off, Hurricane Season 2015 is expected to at or near average.  This may change though if there is a stronger El Nino to occur, but at the moment, the El Nino is relatively weak.  The odds of a tropical disturbance impacting the Mid Atlantic or New England coastline may be slightly elevated, but is very different in terms of percentage wise than average.  We will keep you updated as more information comes out.

The Latest: Warm temperatures, then cold temperatures again?

As spring sets in, winter is preparing to make it’s possibly final move on the Northeast US.  The possibility of another dip in the Arctic Jet Stream is steadily increasing.  So as previously mentioned, don’t put away the winter gear yet.

As winter for the Northeast begins to wind down and warm and cold temperatures fight a raging war in which, obviously, the cold must surrender in, Hurricane Season 2015 approaches. The preliminary estimates in terms of a below average, an average, or an above average season, are suggesting that there will be a close to average season with a very equal chance of the season being weighed towards either below or above average.  Those who are waiting for spring, Weather 360 can promise you that it will come eventually, no matter how unusual the weather may be.

Area.   During Hurricane Season, Weather 360 covers the entire tropical Atlantic Basin and will provide any watches or warnings set out by the NHC and explain what it means.  During winter though, Weather 360 mainly covers all major storms in the Northeast US only.

Localized flooding in New England, more reports of mass destruction in Vanuatu

As rain and snow melt continues for much of the Mid-Atlantic and New England, with the threat of some localized flooding, new reports of mass devastation are coming in from Vanuatu.  It is being described as a tragedy, houses completely demolished, trees completely uprooted, reports of several deaths, this is all from the category five monster Cyclone Pam with winds of over 160 MPH.  The destruction that has been caused by this monster cyclone is going down in the record books, possibly as one of the strongest cyclones of all time in the Southern Hemisphere.  The entire nation of Vanuatu has been impacted by this storm.  Thousands are still without power and running water across the islands.

Cyclone Pam beats down on Vanuatu

The Vanuatu archipelago is being impacted by a monster category five typhoon (hurricane) named Pam.  Pam is dumping nearly two feet of water on the islands of the nation especially on the island which the capital of Vanuatu, Port Vila, is situated.  Typhoon Pam is packing winds over 160 MPH and gusts possibly up to 210 MPH with a storm surge possibly over 20 feet (about 7 meters).  This storm is for the record books, as mass devastation is expected in Vanuatu and some surrounding island nations.

Although most connection in Vanuatu is cut off currently due to the storm, stay safe to those in Vanuatu and for anyone in danger of a natural disaster anywhere.

Could a Cyclone Pam occur in the Atlantic?

A monster category five equivalent cyclone is churning towards Vanuatu with winds of over 160 MPH.  So the question is, could this happen in the US?  The answer is most definitely yes.  This is due to the fact that the same caliber hurricane has occurred before in the Atlantic Basin.  How about Hurricane Katrina, it was a category five hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall as a category three in Louisiana just a few days later.  Now, the other question is, could this happen again? The answer is once again yes.  This is due to the fact that a category five hurricane can easily form if there is little wind shear and warm ocean temperatures.  If a hurricane such as the one churning towards Vanuatu now was to impact the US, Weather 360 will immediately talk about what this could mean for the area to be impacted.

THIS IS A FICTIONAL SITUATION DEPICTING WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF:

A category two hurricane is barreling towards the Northeast.  The following would take place.

1) An emergency email would be sent first including NWS & NHC statements/warnings.

2) Another notification would be sent including all spaghetti model info.

3) The third notification will include landfall odds, facility closure odds,likely road conditions, power outage odds, expected winds, expected rain, expected storm surge, another summary (by Weather 360) on the storm, and another summary of watches/warnings.

There may be some changes to this set up before this is released.

 

 

The National Hurricane Center’s warning system

It’s October 29th 2012, Superstorm Sandy is battering down on the Northeast Coast, 17 are left dead in the United States.  The National Hurricane Center had to strip the Hurricane Warnings that were in place due to Superstorm Sandy being a post-tropical cyclone and no longer maintaining the hurricane status.  In June of 2013 a newer version of the system was put in place, this new version of the system made sure that if there was to be another Sandy or extremely dangerous post tropical cyclone with winds sustained at warning criteria warnings would stay in place.  The new warning system created by the NHC could save lives, when there is a Hurricane Warning people tend to take it more seriously than no warning at all.  The Atlantic Basin is approaching it’s hurricane season, so Weather 360 would like to take the time now to make sure in the back of everyone’s mind they know to heed all advisories, watches, and weather warnings set out by the NHC or NWS.

Weather 360 would just like to update everyone on Weather 360’s changes on this 7 PM EST post by starting out with a slightly altered and official schedule for Weather 360’s updating times: Weekdays, 7AM, a pre afternoon rush hour post, and a 7 PM post.

Now that everyone is caught up on that Weather 360 would also like to point out that Weather 360 will still be providing links for current and future weather conditions around the world for now, but will now only post for the Northeast in the off-hurricane season although we will still be providing forecasts for the whole Atlantic Basin once hurricane season begins this June.

Remember to keep a look out for our knew ‘Hurricane Package’ which is ahead of schedule and is expected to be released sooner than expected pending the time when more information becomes available for dissection.
